The American Leopard Hound had its origin in the United States, with ancestry tracing back to Spanish dogs brought to Mexico and the American Southeast, developing as a distinct breed in North Carolina by the early 1700s.
Despite the name suggesting otherwise, the American Leopard hound does not hunt leopards but was named so based on their spotted coats that resemble a leopard's.
