The Appenzeller Sennenhund is one of four types of Sennenhunds, which are working dog breeds originally from the Swiss Alps. Their names come from the Swiss herders, called Senn, that used to use them for assistance.
Despite their long history in Switzerland, the Appenzeller Sennenhund was only officially recognized as a breed in 1989—that's quite late for a breed that's been around since the Middle Ages!
This breed is known for its remarkable agility. It frequently excels in dog sports such as herding, obedience, showmanship, flyball, tracking, and agility trials.
A unique trait of the Appenzeller Sennenhund is that they are born with a distinctive marking on their back that is often referred to as a "Swiss Cross."
