The Schapendoes, or Dutch Sheepdog, originated in the Netherlands and was primarily used as a herding dog, specifically for sheep, which is reflected in their name, as "Schapen" means sheep, and "does" means dog in Dutch.
Just like cats, Schapendoes have incredible agility which allows them to jump and climb tall objects or rough terrain. They can jump incredibly high relative to their size.
At one point in history, Schapendoes almost vanished. It was after World War II that puppy breeding programs were initiated to bring them back from the brink of extinction.
Schapendoes are known for their intelligent and lively nature. They are quick learners and can master complex commands and tricks.
The Dutch Sheepdog has a shaggy, dense double coat that enables them to withstand harsh and cold climatic conditions. Typically, they have black hair, but it may also be blue-grey, brown, or blonde.
