The Beauceron is an old French breed, first reportedly seen as far back as the Renaissance era, initially working as a type of sheepdog to protect livestock from wolves.
Recognizable for their double dewclaws on their hind legs, this distinct feature is a defining characteristic for Beaucerons that's required in breed standards.
They're not just herding dogs, but they are also used in law enforcement and search and rescue operations, and can even be trained to sniff out explosives due to their excellent nose.
This breed is known for its exceptional endurance and can easily trot up to 50 miles without fatigue, which is why it was used as a messenger during WWI and WWII.
