Finnish Lapphunds were originally bred to herd reindeer by the Sami people, an indigenous Finno-Ugric people inhabiting the Arctic area of Sápmi, spanning parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia.
They have a unique barking style known as "Lapphund speak", characterized by a series of expressive vocalizations, yodels and barks, which they used primarily to ward off predators or communicate with their human companions.
Finnish Lapphunds have a double coat, allowing them to withstand freezing temperatures. The undercoat is fluffy and insulating, while the topcoat is long, coarse, and water-repellant.
The breed was not officially recognized by the Finnish Kennel Club until 1945 as the Lapinporokoira or "Lapp Reindeer dog." It was not until the 1967 that it was given the name Finnish Lapphund.
Despite their medium size, Finnish Lapphunds have surprising stamina and endurance, originally used to follow free-ranging reindeer during the entire winter season. This high endurance level and intelligence make them excellent participants in dog sports like obedience, tracking, and herding events.
