Interesting Facts

1

The Estrela Mountain Dog, also known as the Cão da Serra da Estrela, originated in the Estrela Mountains of Portugal, making it one of the oldest dog breeds in the Iberian Peninsula. Its history dates back over half a millennium in which it was used as a guard dog for flocks of sheep.

2

One unique ability of the Estrela Mountain Dogs is their excellent climbing skills. With their strong bodies and large paws, they are exceptional mountain climbers, a trait which was honed by scaling rugged terrains to protect livestock from predators.

3

An unusual characteristic of this breed is their double dewclaws on their hind legs. They are one of the few breeds to have this trait, which was often believed to provide stability while navigating steep mountain terrains.

4

Estrela Mountain Dogs have a unique coat that helps them survive in harsh weather conditions. They can either have a short, dense coat (smooth variety) or a long, thick, slightly waved coat (long-haired variety), both of which are made for insulation during the cold winters and protection from the summer heat.

5

This breed has an interesting vocalization trait. When Estrela Mountain Dogs notice something out of the ordinary, they wouldn't exactly bark. Instead, they produce an unusual high-pitched singing or baying sound which was historically used to alert shepherds of potential threats.

6

Originating in Portugal’s rugged Serra da Estrela, this ancient livestock guardian is among the country’s oldest native breeds, famed for protecting sheep from wolves.

7

Breed hallmark is a distinctive hook-tipped tail and two coat varieties—long or short—both dense, weatherproof, and suited to icy mountain winds.

8

True to guardian roots, Estrelas are independent decision-makers: aloof with strangers, yet deeply devoted, gentle, and watchful with their families and farmyards.

9

Their name traces to Portugal's Serra da Estrela, or Mountain of the Star; FCI classifies them as Molossoid mountain-type guardians with exceptional endurance.

10

Beyond herding defense, Estrelas historically pulled small carts for vendors, their deep, resonant bark carrying across valleys to warn of intruders.
