The Sloughi, also called the Arabian Greyhound, has a rich history dating back to ancient times and is believed to have originated in North Africa, specifically Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. The breed was highly esteemed by Berber and Bedouin tribes and was used for hunting game like gazelles and hares due to their exceptional speed and hunting skills.
Sloughis are one of the few dog breeds that can reach speeds of up to 37 miles per hour, capable of outpacing many other breeds, even some racehorses!
Unlike the similar-looking Saluki, the Sloughi has a firmer, muscled build, a broader head, and the breed standard requires it to have a smooth, short coat all over, with no feathering on the tail or legs.
The Sloughi's vision is so keen that it has been compared to a pair of binoculars, making them excellent sight hounds. Their vision, combined with their speed, made them prized hunting dogs.
