The Tornjak is actually one of the oldest dog breeds, with records dating back to the 9th century.
The breed's name "Tornjak" translates to "shepherd" in Croatian, and these dogs were primarily used for guarding livestock.
Despite their large size and intimidating presence, Tornjaks are known to be gentle giants and are reputed for their even-temperedness and friendliness towards humans and other dogs.
They originated in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, surviving in harsh winter conditions thanks to their thick, double-layered coat that is resistant to cold and wet weather.
Due to their long-lasting history and cultural significance, the Tornjak is labelled a national treasure in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Tornjaks have a distinct howling-like bark that carries over a long distance, it served to scare away predators and as a communicative signal to their owners in the past.
These dogs are all-natural athletes - despite their size, they are incredibly agile and can move with great speed when needed.
Tornjak dogs have strong protective instincts and would bravely stand up against wolves and bears to protect their flocks.
Though not widespread globally, Tornjaks gained international recognition in 2007 when the breed was officially recognized by the International Canine Federation.
Incredibly patient and calm, Tornjaks are excellent with children, making them a good choice for a family pet. However, because of their large size, they are more suitable to homes with ample open spaces.
