Thai Ridgebacks are a very old and pure breed, originally thought to have been bred more than 400 years ago in eastern Thailand, making them one of the few breeds that have been able to maintain their genetic purity over the centuries.

The Thai Ridgeback is named after its unique trait of having a strip of hair growing in the opposition direction along its back, forming a 'ridge'. This is shared only by two other breeds worldwide, the Rhodesian Ridgeback and the Phu Quoc dog.

They were initially used for multiple purposes including hunting, guarding, and as draught dogs. Their agility and intelligence made them excellent at these varied roles.

The breed is known to have a remarkable jumping ability. They can often be seen leaping high into the air, often as a method to catch birds!
