The Treeing Walker Coonhound is a breed that was strictly developed in the United States, mostly in the South in the 19th century, with lineage traced back to English Foxhounds that were brought over in colonial times.

2

Famous for its unique ability to 'tree' its prey, the Treeing Walker Coonhounds are so named because they chase raccoons (or other small game) up into the branches and then "sing" at the base of the tree to alert their owners.

3

The 'singing' or howling that they do at the base of the tree where they have trapped their quarry is euphemistically referred to as the "Coonhound Bell" due to its harmonic and distinct sound.

4

Treeing Walker Coonhounds are most known in popular culture as the breed of choice for Old Dan and Little Ann, the two dogs featured in Wilson Rawls' beloved novel "Where the Red Fern Grows."

5

The breed wasn't officially recognized by the American Kennel Club until only very recently: January 1, 2012, to be precise, making it one of the newest breeds to garner this distinction.

6

Despite their hunting instincts, Treeing Walker Coonhounds are famously good around children and are known for their unusually friendly and sociable nature, making them excellent family pets.

7

Treeing Walker Coonhounds are fast and agile dogs, capable of chasing their prey at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour.

8

This breed has a highly developed sense of smell, second only to the Bloodhound, making it an excellent tracker and a top choice for search and rescue missions.

9

Surprisingly for a hunting breed, the Treeing Walker Coonhound is not a high-energy dog and is content with moderate exercise, though they do need mental stimulation to prevent boredom.

10

This breed typically has a unique 'tricolor' coat pattern, consisting primarily of white, black, and tan colors. This is thought to enhance its visibility in the dark for hunters.
