When people hear “low-shedding” or “hypoallergenic,” they usually think it means less work and less grooming. In reality, it’s usually the opposite. Some of the most popular family dogs actually need the most routine maintenance, especially when it comes to grooming. It’s not just about keeping your dog looking good, it directly affects their comfort and skin health. Certain breeds, in particular, like Poodles, Shih Tzus and other long haired breeds, benefit from regular professional grooming, and in some cases, it makes things safer for everyone involved.

Key Takeaways

  • Low-shedding doesn’t mean low-maintenance

  • Dogs with continuously growing hair need regular upkeep

  • Matting can sneak up faster than most people expect

  • Professional grooming can help avoid injuries in sensitive areas

  • Staying on a schedule makes everything easier long-term

High Maintenance Dog Breeds With Hair Instead Of Fur

Some of the highest maintenance dogs are the ones with hair instead of fur. They don’t shed much, which is why people are drawn to them—but that also means the hair just keeps growing.

If the coat is not brushed properly or kept on a schedule, it tangles. And honestly, it doesn’t take long. I’ve seen it a lot, especially with doodles and Shih Tzus. What starts as a small knot can turn into tight matting close to the skin before the owner even realizes it’s happening.

Why Do Hypoallergenic Dogs Need Regular Grooming?

A lot of people assume hypoallergenic dogs are easier to take care of. That’s not necessarily the case. Their coats tend to hold onto loose hair, dirt, and oils instead of shedding it out.

So if they’re not groomed regularly, everything just kind of builds up and gets trapped under their coat. That’s when you start seeing tangles, and skin issues.

Dogs That Don’t Shed But Require Frequent Grooming

Dogs that don’t shed are often labeled as “easy,” but that’s usually not the case. Many actually need more maintenance than shedding breeds.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people brushing only the top of the coat. Meanwhile, the legs, belly, ears, and armpits are where the worst matting happens. Those spots get missed all the time.

Poodle Grooming Needs And Curly Haired Dog Breeds

Poodles are one of the most popular family friendly breeds, who require regular grooming. Their coat is thick, curly, and always growing.

Why Poodles Require Professional Haircuts

Poodles have a great coat when managed properly. The great thing about their coats is the flexibility you have. Yes, they can mat, but there are so many different haircuts and styles a professional can create with a Poodle coat even in a short more easily maintained fashion.

Something a lot of people don’t realize is that good breeders start grooming exposure routines really early, as early as a few weeks old. That’s because grooming is a huge part of their entire life.

When that early exposure doesn’t happen, it usually shows later. Dogs come in nervous, hard to handle, sometimes matted, it just makes everything harder and more stressful than it needs to be for everyone.

Curly Coats And Matting Risks In Dogs

Curly coats tend to mat faster because the hair twists into itself. If brushing isn’t consistent, and actually thorough, it builds up quickly. It is important to brush the whole dog, not just the easy to access spots.

At a certain point, brushing it out isn’t realistic anymore. It’s uncomfortable for the dog, and most of the time the safest option is to shave it down and start over. A refresh of the coat can be a restart for the dog and the owner. Most owners hate seeing their dogs naked, but it becomes (what we call)  humanity over vanity which means your dog's comfort trumps the froo-froo haircut you want them to have but aren’t willing to do the work to maintain.

Long Haired Dog Breeds That Require Frequent Grooming

Long-haired dogs need more than a quick brush here and there. Their coats take actual routine and maintenance to stay in good shape.

Shih Tzus And Yorkshire Terriers Grooming Routine

Shih Tzus and Yorkies both have hair that keeps growing, similar to human hair. Without regular grooming, it tangles pretty easily.

The worst areas tend to be around the ears, armpits, and underneath. Those spots mat faster and are also more sensitive, which makes grooming them a bit trickier. Yorkies especially are known for having thin skin, so it is important to know what blades/brushes to use to reduce the chance of injury.

If you are brushing your dogs, make sure to not over brush the same spot within one session. This can cause brush burn, which is painful and can lead to skin issues.

Cocker Spaniel Coat Maintenance

Cocker Spaniels have an extremely thick coat that needs regular brushing and haircuts to stay manageable.

Their ears especially need attention. They’re long, they hold moisture, and if they’re not kept clean and brushed out, they can mat or get irritated pretty quickly.

Cockers are prone to ear and skin infections, that’s why if you bathe a dog like a Cocker with a thick coat, that they are dried completely.

Dog Grooming Schedule And Grooming Tips For High Maintenance Breeds

Having a consistent grooming schedule really makes everything easier and less stressful, for you and your dog.

From what I’ve seen, most high maintenance coats do best with:

  • Full grooming every 6–8 weeks

  • Brushing at least 2-3 times a week

  • More frequent visits if the coat mats easily

It’s one of those things where if you stay on top of it, it’s manageable. If you don’t, it turns disastrous quickly.

If you struggle to stay consistent, PawChamp helps you build a simple at-home brushing routine and handling practice that prevents matting from sneaking up between grooms.

Do Huskies Need Grooming Despite Their Shorter Coat

Huskies don’t need haircuts, but they definitely need grooming. A good de-shedding bath can make all the difference for a double coated dog like a husky. Getting the extra coat out, can help reduce the likelihood of skin infections developing from a compacted coat.

Their undercoat is thick, and when it starts shedding, especially during seasonal changes, it comes out in clumps. We call that “blowing coat”.

And personality-wise… they’re probably the most dramatic dogs I’ve worked with. Not aggressive, just very vocal. They’ll howl, “talk,” and make it very clear how they feel about the situation.

How Often Should A Dog Be Groomed

How often a dog should be groomed depends on a few things like coat type, lifestyle, and how quickly they mat. If you have a long haired dog who is a swimmer or likes to get dirty, it may be best to take the coat shorter, for easier maintenance and typically they can go longer between grooms.

For most high maintenance dogs, every 6–8 weeks is a good baseline. Some need more frequent care, especially if their coat tangles easily or the owner is not brushing at home between grooms.

Brushing in between appointments is just as important, even if it feels like a lot. Although, it’s easier to take 3-5 minutes daily and keep up on the coat, than do it 3 weeks apart when the coat has already started matting.

Professional Dog Grooming Vs Home Grooming

Grooming at home can work, but it’s not always the best option for every dog.

Dogs that are young, not used to grooming, or just unpredictable can be tough to handle without experience. It doesn’t take much for things to go wrong, especially in sensitive areas. If you aren’t experienced with matting especially, using the wrong blade under a mat can catch the skin causing tears and open wounds.

There’s also a difference between basic upkeep and a full groom. Knowing when to do it yourself and when to bring in a professional is essential.
